Maker Faire

The Tyler Modern Quilt Guild will have a booth at The Tyler Mini Maker Faire, Saturday, April 29.  We will have three sewing machines set up and we will be showing children how to sew basic quilt blocks and demonstrations of what they can do with that start.

Beginner Quilting - How to make a Four Patch Block

Our project is to teach kids (and interested adults) how to sew and the beginning process to make a quilt. We will be bringing from 1500-2000 2.5 inches x 2.5 inches fabric squares, 2-3 sewing machines along with their cords and pedals plus some sewing notions that will be needed such as small scissors, seam rippers, seam gauges or rulers, thread, etc. We will be teaching the children to sew a 4 patch block using a 1/4 inch seam. First they will sew 2 squares together, then they will sew 2 more squares together and then we will show them how to sew the first 2 on top of the second 2 to make a 4.5 by 4.5 inch square which is a 4 patch block. The kids will be able to dig through the box of blocks to choose the 4 that they want to sew together. We will also have some samples of things you can make with a 4 patch block such as a doll quilt, small pillow, pincushion, coaster, or mug rug. We would like to be able to display some of our quilts, perhaps on a ladder or some other type of display.

Our members have spent the last couple months sewing items using the basic four patch block to show all the creative things you can do after you learn to make this block.

Be sure to come out and bring your children and grandchildren.  It will be a lot of fun.
